Fanta Jawara, Detained In Gambian Prison for Nearly a Year, Returns Home with Help of Richardson Center

Fanta Jawara was met with family, friends, and cameras upon her return from Gambia, after being detained in prison for the better part of a year.

Jawara visited family in Gambia last April, and while there, was wrongfully accused of participating in an illegal protest. Though she is a legal American citizen, she was detained there for nearly 12 months.

With efforts from The Richardson Center for Global Engagement to negotiate her release, and the eventual turnover of power to a new president of Gambia, Fanta Jawara has finally been allowed to return to the States.

The Center is thrilled to see their efforts come to fruition, and wishes Fanta a warm, and long-awaited welcome home.
